Beyond The Border

Beyond the Border Wales International Storytelling Festival takes place once every two years in the grounds of a stunning fairy tale castle by the sea, just outside of Cardiff, Wales.  The 3 day greenfield event features an International programme of story telling and world music, including Company of Storytellers, Transglobal Underground, Cat Weatherill, She'Koyokh and Fernhill to name just a few, alongside other festival treats including street theatre, shadow puppet workshops, fire show and more.

The site itself is beautiful and you might say almost needs no enhancement, but there's always aplace for clever, interesting different things to look at, and so we are looking for up to 6 pieces of temporary site installation art.  We want to give artists a chance to showcase their skills, prove that story and image go hand in hand, and for them to make a real difference to our festival site in the following ways:

• decorate key points in front of fencing blocking off major access routes (several possible locations)

• camouflage barriers placed to keep audiences away from a drop

• mark the route between camp-site and festival

• encourage audiences to explore a paved/statued garden space

• highlight the beauty of the welsh language – for example embedding within the work

words or phrases associated with story (for non welsh speakers a suggested list can be provide  – this could be combined with any of the other elements

We aim to appoint 4-5 commissions to artists with some experience of temporary outdoor arts looking to grow their portfolio, and 1-2 commissions to artists with no/limited experience of temporary outdoor arts who would like a first opportunity (most suitable for local artists who can make a site visit at their own expense). Artists who apply in groups or pairs may bid for more than one commission – individual artists will only be eligible for one commission (due to time constraints for on site build, and because we want to maximise variety).

Fee offer (applies to both types of artist):

£500 Fixed fee per piece. This fee is intended to cover all materials and travel expenses. It may also be used to make acontribution to artist time, if materials and travel costs are low.1 pair of weekend passes for the festival or 1 family weekend pass (value £200/£250) (for team build projects we may consider additional passes, but you must convince us of need forlarger team)
