Rob da Bank says: ‘2 weeks to go, 2 weeks to go! I’m getting truly excited about opening the gates and lowering the drawbridge at Camp Bestival for all you lovely folk. Have you got your medieval fancy dress packed? Aside from my first love, the music, there are so many ace parts of Camp Bestival to explore and our literary and arts line up is better than ever bolstered by the ever amazing House Of Fairy Tales. Do check it all out and discover something different!'
Deep in the Lower Kids Garden lies the East Lulworth Literary Institute an oasis of mind expanding treats for the grown-ups. From debates, to talks – including Olivia Lee chatting up erstwhile Libertine Carl Barat - to author readings and spoken word, this is THE place to catch the latest literary lovelies and inspirational ideas for living.
Starting bright and early on Friday morning we have a festival exclusive, the RSA Hour, with dedicated Freegan, Tristram Stuart telling us how to be less wasteful with our food. Kate Tempest will be heading up our team of talented spoken word maestro’s, hand-picked by Camp Bestival favourite Scroobius Pip, including Toby Thompson, Jodi Ann Bickley and the Roundhouse Poetry Collective. The hottest authors of the moment will be reading specially chosen extracts from their latest masterpieces to whet your literary appetite, including Jon Ronson (of ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’ fame), Joe Dunthorne (whose book Submarine was recently made into a brilliant film) Sam Leith and David Whitehouse. Bring a blanket and pretend it’s bedtime.
We are very excited to be welcoming the fabulous Olivia Lee, who’ll be gracing us with her interviewing genius and chatting up our favourite Libertine Carl Barat, plus another special guest not to be missed! And if that hasn’t fuelled your brain cells with enough stimuli yet, then join us with horticulture extraordinaire Diarmuid Gavin to reveal his best tricks in the trade of ‘How to be a Gardener’.
On Saturday morning, camping buffs will be up bright and early to hear Matthew De Abaitua (editor-at-large of the Idler) reading from his acclaimed guide The Art of Camping, communities expert Henry Hemming will head up the RSA Hour to teach us how we can achieve more through cooperation. Then we can’t wait for international style icon, world class DJ, yummy mummy and lovable exaggerator Sara Cox to adorn us to her wise words of experience in the feat of keeping the many balls of life firmly in the air with her ‘How to be a mum, have a career and still find time to eat sushi’ live interview.
Gizzi Erskine, the fabulous food writer, chef and presenter of Channel 4’s ‘Cook Yourself Thin’ will give us a host of tips on how to cook delicious grub for family and friends sustainably and cheaply with ‘How to make a meal of it’. And we are incredibly chuffed to be welcoming the one and only Simon Day from the Fast Show to read from his latest novel Comedy and Error. He enthuses “I’m really excited for my first ever Camp Bestival!” We are too! The Tate will take to the floor with their watercolour workshop, followed by a debate on the very British nature of watercolour, led by host and Cabaret Futura veteran the wonderful Richard Strange, with surprise guests.
On Sunday morning, we start gently with some lyrical offerings from our spoken word friends Ventriloquist, Ross Sutherland, Chester P, Jam Baxter, David J, Alex Gwyther and Indigo Williams. Then Idler founder Tom Hodgkinson will be taking to the RSA airwaves to enlighten us on how to be more capable and self-reliant in our everyday lives. Renowned graphic designer Vaughan Oliver - famed for his 4AD connections, as well as his recent designs for David Lynch’s ‘Good Day Today’ on Sunday Best – will give us his insights into ‘How To Design A Record Sleeve’. And if you are wondering ‘How To Change Your Career’ then join Howard Marks while he offers an insight into his colourful CV.
