The children’s area is a magical mini-festival as diverse as the rest of Latitude, packed full with things to do, shows to watch, lots to make, and tonnes of fun!
Here’s a taste of what’s going on:
Sparkle & Dark’s travelling players perform the ‘Clock Master’ - A visually enchanting and dark modern fable performed with music, animation and moments of puppet-peril! When a stubborn young girl enters a shop of clockwork wonders, she soon finds herself lost amongst the Clock Master's strange stories of magic and music boxes! Of minstrels and monkeys! Of clockwork girls and paper birds.
Laughing Lizard theatre group return with…’Pirate adventures 2’ .Shiver me timbers me hearties! Captain Ma’larkey and her ship The Barnacle Bottom have been kidnapped by the meanest pirate of the seas, Captain No Beard. Join the crew on an exciting action packed voyage and be in with the chance to share the booty! Undergo a pirate makeover and learn to sing and dance like a pirate.
Off the Road Theatre returns with their popular interactive drama workshops in the ‘Wild, Wild West’. Two worlds seem so far apart, but can we bring them together? WANTED: kids who can help this cowboy find his Indian girl. REWARD = Love and Happiness!
Shine on Stage will be running daily Musical Madness workshops where you will be able to work with performers from the West End to re-create extracts from some of the most popular musicals around: Lion King, Les Miserables and We Will Rock You
Kats Whiskers present ‘The Hamwehads’…go deep underground to a magical place called “Down Below” where rabbits are French chefs, mice generate electricity and Hamwehads rule! With animated puppets, lyrical poetry, imaginative storytelling and a death defying slapstick battle, your only worry is will Asa and Lola ever get home?
Tuckedin Productions present ‘Tim and Light’; a beautiful new fairy tale told through playful physical theatre and intricate puppetry! Our boy hero, Tim, lives with his bossy Mum and is approaching his difficult teenage years. One day Tim is visited by a silver cat. With no owner stepping forward, Tim adopts the mysterious stray and names her ‘Light’. A few days later, Tim and Light become embroiled in a dangerous and mystical adventure that sets them on the path to a daring rescue mission.
The Italian Job! Watch the show and then cook your own Pizza at the end! The show guides children through the pizza making process, from making the dough right through to baking it in a real wood fired oven.
Face Painting – be a butterfly, a superhero…sparkle & shine when you get your face painted by the Faceinations team. Pop along with your ideas!!!!!
Woolley Balloon present: ‘The Dhobi Ghat Monster’. Primark Beware, the Ghat monster is on its way………….and it’s hungry!! Exploring disposable fashion and its consequences Woolley Balloon will lead a series of workshops where the audiences will work with the ‘the Ghat keepers’ to build the monster over the course of the weekend. The children will see the monster grow and on Sunday the monster will break free into the rest of the festival, a carnival of Laundry!
Pop into the Pixie Post Office where pixies have lovely postcards to colour in. Then you can buy a real stamp and post your card to a friend, telling them what you’ve been doing at Latitude! Next door more pixies from the Fairyland Trust will be making wands, wings and fairy crowns.
Angel Gardens have been providing festival fun for families and children for years and we’re happy to welcome them back. Look out for the majestic bell tents, beautiful gardens, seating areas, bunting, musicians and friendly crew. Their exciting activities include…
Knitting for peace: come and sit in one of the lovely cosy bell tents and learn how to knit…. don't think it'll be boring... OH NO! Come and see-you'll never leave!!
Circus: We will have some fab circus guys to wow and amaze you and you can even have a go too!!! Come and get dressed as a clown and help put on a circus show... watch out for fire breathing and juggling shows!!!
Vintage Games and Music: In the gardens you will find benches, sculptures and other magical stuff, come and sit and chill, play a vintage board game like Mouse Trap or Connect Four... look out on a night as the candles are lit and the gardens become a magical place for all....musicians will play for you throughout the day and you can even bring your own instruments if you fancy a jam.
Heartstitch activities are just as much fun for boys as girls. They will be customising clothes and running funky hand stitching workshops with lots to make for all ages: for creative fun & inspiration.
Suffolk Wildlife Trust is bursting with outdoor activities to inspire children to get closer to nature. There are seven pond dipping sessions every day from our pond dipping platform on the lake where you can find dragonfly larvae and water beetles amongst other exciting creatures. On Saturday there will be a twilight walk to look for night time wildlife, your chance to see what lurks and flies in the dark. Every day in the woods there will be bug hunts, whittling elder and natural sculptures plus more. By the tent there will be a chance to get creative with willow, making head dresses, flags and mobiles plus wildlife crafts for the younger ones.
Art & craft village: with the wonderful woodcraft folk. The Waveney Valley Woodcraft Folk offer tonnes of fun, dozens of workshops spilling out across their huge tent and workshop base – join them for heaps to make and take away!!
Get up close and personal with some big bugs! The MiniMonsters Creepy Crawly Roadshow is a hand on animal encounter with a range of invertebrates and reptiles. Each session lasts about an hour and is presented by Kate Jackson, a zoologist with bags of knowledge, enthusiasm... and stories about slime, scales and poo!
Discover the Mission:Explore tent at Latitude this year to attempt absurd, radical and guerrilla challenges around the festival site. Search out this place of randomness to get your daily fill of missions, dares, scavenger hunts, wide games, mob challenges, friendly fights, adventure painting , high visibility hide and seek and sheep making (yes, we're making sheep). Led by the authors of the Mission:Explore children's books. These activities are exclusive to everyone. Get ready to Mission: Explore!
The Soul Bay Baby and Toddler Chill Out Tent is an enclosed indoor and outdoor play area for babies and toddlers; has everything to offer for tiny tots. Free water and sun cream for under fives, soft play area, baby changing facilities, baby bath time…even Tea & coffee for weary parents.
The Book Nook presents some of the best-loved characters in children’s books, sponsored by Macmillan Children’s Books & Stripes Publishing. Journey into the woods and meet The Gruffalo and his friend Shaun Keavney. Guy Bass returns with his latest creation, inhabitant of Castle Grotteskew, Stitch Head. Holly Webb will be talking about her best-selling books, including Lost In The Snow. Emma Kennedy will unravel mysteries with apprentice detective, Wilma Tenderfoot. Everyone’s favourite dirt-magnet, Dirty Bertie will be brought to life by his author Alan Macdonald, and Steve Hartley will be demonstrating record breaking attempts, as undertaken by Danny Baker - Record Breaker.
This year The Library will have books to borrow & read, storytelling & things to do & make plus a few surprises!! Find the library in the two medieval tents near the Children’s Arena entrance. Latitude loves a good read, so to encourage all you budding bookworms we’ll have free children’s books in the Children’s Arena and family campsite for you to take to your tent or read on the way home.
New to Latitude this year is The Inbetweeners: Teen Area.
Take ‘A Walk on the Wild Side’ with Greenpeace this year - head to their log cabin and check out the range of bush-craft activities from den building to survival skills, plus treetop adventures including an aerial runway run by Monkey-Do, a not-for-profit wild play provider bringing young people and trees together for fun!
Culture Works is for anyone interested in media, technology and music. Each session is run by people who work in the industry and the programme may include: Make your own ringtone, Beat Boxing / MC’ing, DJ’ing, Design & Produce a Comic book or storyboard, Digital Photography, Animation, Live Reviewing around the Latitude site….all equipment and workshop materials inc CD’s, DVD’s will be provided free of charge.
Culture Works HQ will be the Rock Hopper - a mobile recording studio housed in a 1963 Airstream…the most exciting recording studio ever built!
