WatchTheDuck are musical innovators, groundbreakers and scene-changers who are poised to take the music they love to people and places they would never have imagined possible. This is evolution in action; ingenuity on a roll. “Poppin’ Off,” their debut single set for release June 23rd via Relentless Records, reflects their broad musical history—a history that embraces soul, dance, trap, rap, hip hop and dubstep with something fresh, new and exciting that’s aimed at a much broader crowd. The results are revolutionary.
The video for “Poppin’ Off” is a ground level intro to the crew—which includes Alabama natives Eddie Smith III, Jesse Rankins and Jonathan Wells, three accomplished musicians, producers and DJs based in Atlanta by-way-of Alabama—and their operating philosophy, lifestyle and, now, the fourth fowl member — THE DUCK. “Everybody sees the duck traveling smoothly on top of the water,” Eddie says. “But nobody sees it kicking hard as hell underneath it, struggling to stay afloat.”
Their video has garnered more than 1 million views on YouTube—from word of mouth alone—making WatchTheDuck a genuine viral hit. The video was selected as a contender for mtvU’s Freshman competition. By popular demand votes, “Poppin’ Off” won the mtvU Freshman competition where the music video is now airing additionally on college campuses across the nation. In addition, MTV JAMS added the turbo-charged music video into rotation and raves, “WatchTheDuck got everyone poppin’ and totally dominatedIts been a similar success across this side of the pond with “Poppin’ Off” enjoying Record Of The Week on Radio 1’s Phil & Alice show, not only this but the track has also been featured as Zane Lowe’s Next Hype track.
The infectious, high energy video for “Poppin’ Off’ also features the band’s extended family, the Dragon House Crew (which includes the hypnotically robotic, dance moves of Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer of So You Think You Can Dance fame), in their natural environment: a house party. Of the Dragon House Crew, Eddie says, “They make music visible, they make you see what we’re playing. We’re all about making it visible, which is why we’re not just on stage DJing to tracks. We’re literally reworking and replaying everything live.”
For WatchTheDuck it’s been a natural progression. They are not only musical pioneers, they are also part of a groundbreaking movement. Their dynamic, conceptual brilliance is setting them on a path for a meteoric rise to the top. For WatchTheDuck, it’s all about making great music that they love first, but instead of just handing down their sonic manna from some DJ booth on high, they are bringing their brand of infectious dub-funk to the people with their own hands—sweating it directly onto the dance floor. Now is the time for them to take their movement, that has been embraced by the Atlanta underground scene, to the people, proving how ingenuity and bold artistry can bring all of us to musical landscapes we never could have imagined! WatchTheDuck is for everyone.
