Part 2 - Sat The Rainbow, BirminghamMiguel Campbell, Adam Shelton, Robert James, Richie Ahmed
Much dance music chat focuses on hotbeds like Detroit and Berlin. But for English fans of the underground, they need look no further than the confines of their own shores for some genuinely exciting scenes. A number of UK stars - Matt Tolfrey, Jordan Peak, Jozif, Frenchy, Miguel Campbell, Adam Shelton, RobertJames, Richie Ahmed - are making waves in the worlds of house and techno in 2011, and Birmingham night Face aim to highlight that fact with headline sets from each of them at a new series of parties.
Held quarterly - and adorned with artwork from Shane Meadows’ film of the same name - This Is England will be a uniquely themed opportunity to catch the best of British talent in the impressive, multi-roomed party space that is The Rainbow.
The first two parties will feature the brightest shining UK stars named above - all of whom will be joined by FACE resident favourites, Scott Bleepz and Elliot Croft – whilst the next two parties will then showcase another two waves of break-through and established talent once gain, with continued focus on the gritty theme of This Is England…
Part 1 - Sat 12th November at The Rainbow, BirminghamMatt Tolfrey, Jordan Peak, Jozif, Frenchy, Scott Bleepz, Elliot Croft
The first party of the new This Is England series is on Saturday November 12th at the three-roomed space that is the Rainbow, and is to be headlined by Matt Tolfrey, Jordan Peak, Jozif, Frenchy and residents Scott Bleepz and Elliot Croft.
For five years now, Matt Tolfrey has steered his Leftroom label (and its many off-shoots from limited edition vinyl to digital only) through the changing tides of dance music from tech house, through more stripped back minimal and onto deeper, freakier sounds. He's done so while garnering more and more fans himself as a result of DJ sets everywhere from London to Mexico via the Middle East and South America. That should come as no surprise really, given that at the age of just 21 Matt was invited to play fabric by the peerless Craig Richards off the back of one of his early warm-up sets in Nottingham...
Fellow Brit talent Jordan Peak, meanwhile, already has a number of worthy releases on Robsoul, Raum...Musik and Saved to his name. His vibe takes in plenty of old school house aesthetics but pairs them with a future vision that makes them some of the hottest joints out there right now. Recent releases have been on One Records and Tsuba (with a Steffi remix, no less) respectively, and mark outPeak as a true British star.
He’s joined by Wolf + lamb sensation, jozif. The London producer’s disco flecked sounds are as musical as they come, with beautiful chords littering his spacious, slo-mo beats and taking him from Fabric, London, to WMC, to just about every decent club in Europe. Last but not least of these homegrown talents is Frenchy. Guest spots at UK clubs like the Sub Club, Below and Just Jack, to name a few, as well as playing further a field in countries like Croatia and Berlin have served to reinforce Frenchy's presence and make him a favorite amongst the musical heads that know…
Part 2 at The Rainbow, BirminghamMiguel Campbell, Adam Shelton, Robert James, Richie Ahmed
Part 2 of the Face Presents This is England showcase will feature four more talents from these fine shores, namely Miguel Campbell, Adam Shelton, Robert James and Richie Ahmed.
Leeds based producer Miguel Campbell has already had assured releases on Wolf & Lamb and Hot Creations, with his late-night, vocal flecked house sounds perfectly aligned with those labels. Joining him will be fellow HC cohorts Robert James and Richie Ahmed, both of whom have relased on the label, and both of whom have their own unique take on retro-tinged, pure house and disco joy. As DJs, too, they tour the world playing WMC, Ibiza and Fabric in regular cycles.
Last but by no means least is local lad Adam Shelton. Having started the underground gathering that is Below and having been invited to play at some of this country’s finest clubs, Shetlon started the now well established ONE Records with comrade Subb-An. Releasing a raw brand of tech house, the likes of Kris Wadsworth, Jordan Peak, Jef K and Burnski.
With this much talent floating about in England, there’s no need to go anywhere else in the world, despite the hype. Bringing it all together under one roof, Face’s This IS England parties are sure to be memorable indeed.
