The Magic Loungeabout returns for its third year with an inspiring programme of music and arts at the end of July, and includes some burgeoning local talent.
There is no denying the challenges facing any talented young musicians wanting to establish a career. But one way to get noticed is to appear alongside the big names. The Magic Loungeabout Festival at Broughton Hall near Skipton this summer is showcasing a number of up and coming groups who will play in the same venue as headliners Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, The Charlatans and Inner City.
One such group has a very strong local flavour. Alternative electro-pop trio M.A.S.K.S were formed in November 2011 in the Skipton area. They have already been featured by Huw Stephens on BBC Introducing, as well as being one of the winners of Radio Aire’s Unsigned Competition. Bassist and co-writer Chris Dobson and drummer Josh Toulmin both hail from Silsden and attended South Craven School. Vocalist and co-writer Christine Reeday was brought up in Kettlewell, attended Upper Wharfedale School and Skipton Girls’ High School, before studying at Leeds College of Music.
M.A.S.K.S write all their own material, creating a unique, energetic and sometimes haunting sound. Like most aspiring bands, and in the footsteps of many of the greats, the music has to be weaved around a day job. Josh is a landscape gardener and Chris is starting a business making and repairing guitars, alongside his profession as a printer. Christine currently works as a freelance singer and singing teacher. For Christine music runs in the family. Her brother Richard, a former Ermysted’s pupil, is a successful musical director who has worked in the West End with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group. They are releasing their debut album later this year.
