Highly-regarded folk rock band Merry Hell are to headline the 7th Unicorn Summer Beer Festival in picturesque Newton Solney, South Derbyshire.
Formed from the ashes of the much-loved Tansads, the north-west band’s 2011 debut album Blink … And You Miss It has garnered rave reviews and earned them slots at some of the summer’s biggest festivals, including two barnstorming sets at the Big Session in June. Folk, rock, and even a pinch of punk energy combine to make Merry Hell an unmissable live experience.
They’re joined at the Unicorn Inn on Saturday, July 28 by the Jay Tamkin Band. A hard-touring guitarist and multi-instrumentalist grounded in the blues, but bringing jazz and many other influences to bear, Jay has played with some of the greats and has the song writing ability and musical chops to fulfill his huge potential.
As always at The Unicorn, licensee Paul Needham has selected a wide variety of ales to suit every taste. This year, there’s a Cornish theme and there will be more than 45 real ales on offer in the separate beer marquee.
On Sunday, July 29, an afternoon ‘Party in the Car Park’ features music from Paul Miro, JP Cooper, Julie Collings and Matt McGuinness.
As the frontman and songwriter behind the 1990s rock powerhouse Apes, Pigs & Spacemen, Paul Miro cut a compelling figure with his colossal vocal range and tendency to flip between ground shaking guttural barks and heart-shredding melodic masterpieces. Now combining his solo work with membership of Simon Friend’s Seismic Survey, the Levellers’ guitarist’s side project, this is a chance to catch Paul in acoustic mode.
One of Manchester’s finest new talents, JP Cooper’s music is a mix of folk, soul and gospel. His spine-tingling and utterly brilliant voice marries up with captivating, life affirming lyrics to leave you spellbound, heart-warmed and inspired every time. …/
Julie Collings brings beautiful melodies, crystal clear vocals, fantastic harmonies, and a worldly wisdom far beyond her 30 years, taking in influences including Shawn Colvin, The Beatles, Ani DiFranco, and Suzanne Vega. Julie has a dreamy, melancholic sound that’s earned her a loyal following and superb live reputation.
Matt McGuinness is the frontman of Karl and The Marx Brothers, purveyors of deeply passionate and melodic angry folk tunes of substance since 2010, and will be performing some of their material solo.
Music begins on Friday, July 27 with Midnight Pumpkin Trucks – always a hit at the Unicorn beer festival, the band performs covers from the cream of British and American rock and pop. They’re supported by Black Mariah, four young local guys delivering rock and metal covers.
The festival starts with a tasting session on Thursday, July 26.
Food available during the festival will include a hog roast, fish and chip van and Sunday afternoon barbecue, as well as a full menu of restaurant and bar meals available in the pub.
Admission to all the beer festival sessions is free of charge and Newton Solney is on the Trent-Barton Villager V3 bus route between Derby and Burton upon Trent.
