Following in the wake of international movie success and an award-winning theatre production, the emotional triumph War Horse will be performed as a unique reading by universally-acclaimed Devon-based author Michael Morpurgo at Sidmouth FolkWeek - the annual celebration of music, arts and dance which takes place in the stunning seaside resort from 3rd – 10th August 2012

The performance will feature heart-rending songs from the theatre show songmaker John Tams, alongside long-time collaborator Barry Coope

One of Britain’s most celebrated children’s authors and former Children’s Laureate, Morpurgo found his inspiration for this story from an old man in his local Iddesleigh pub. As a young man, the 80 year old had been “with ‘orses” in France with the Devon Yeomanry. He conveyed to Michael the horrors of war, of living with the constant fear, about the only comfort he took in talking with his horse as he fed him at night. Master storyteller Michael has brought his epic story alive in the moving account of the ‘war horse’ Joey and his journey from the peaceful farms of Dartmoor to the First World War battlefields of France.

A rare and moving opportunity to hear Michael Morpurgo reading from his own story
