Island Records has announced today at the request of The Fisherman’s Friends the release of their single and video "Mary Anne". Filmed only weeks prior to Trevor Grills tragic death in February 2013, the new song features Trevor as lead vocalist and his last performance with the rest of The Fisherman’s Friends filmed near Padstow. Whilst the group have made no firm decision about their future together, they have confirmed they will release the single and their second album ‘ONE AND ALL’ in memory of their friend and fellow performer Trevor Grills on 19 August 2013.

All existing plans, including the release of their second album and all future live dates, were cancelled following the traumatic incident on 9 February 2013, which took the lives of both Trevor Grills and the band’s tour promoter Paul McMullen.

The Fisherman’s Friends said: “For us there is no better way to celebrate the life and work of our friend Trevor, than to let him say it in his own special beautiful way. Sadly, he never got to see the video, but we will always remember the day it was filmed. It was bitterly cold, but to see Trevor so happy, doing what he loved is an image that will stay with us forever. We will miss him always.”

The album originally due to be released at the end of March 2013, has been renamed ‘ONE AND ALL’, the motto from the Cornish coat of arms frequently used by Trevor, and will now be released on 19 August 2013, simultaneously with the single Mary Anne. Despite the decision to release the album, the future for the group and the nine remaining members of The Fisherman’s Friends is still uncertain. The deaths of both Trevor Grills and Paul McMullen was devastating for the group and no decisions have been made whether they will continue performing and recording. They group have confirmed that all live dates have been cancelled for at least one year, including any performances on the platt in Port Isaac where the group have performed each summer without fail for the past 20 years.

The Fisherman’s Friends said: “Nothing feels right without Trevor, and the events of earlier this year will  not be forgotten quickly. We are just not ready to make any decisions about the future of the group at this stage and performing without him is just unthinkable.“

‘ONE AND ALL’
is the follow-up to The Fisherman’s Friends’ eponymous debut album, which saw the group rocket into the UK album chart top ten selling over 150,000 copies and confirming their position as the fastest selling traditional folk act ever. The album is a collection of 14 songs from the sea and grand old shanties, and highlights some of the most beautiful and haunting personal favourites of the ten Cornishmen. From the spine-tingling Last Leviathan (also sung by Trevor Grills) to the rousing Mollymauk, The Fisherman’s Friends’ combined vocal strength has never sounded better or more moving. Many of the songs were designed to be uplifting work songs, but often lyrically they came from the dark depths of the ocean.

The album also features a few new tracks including Sweet Maid of Madeira, the very first composition by The Fisherman’s Friends’ Billy Hawkins and Jon Cleave, Mary Anne a track that was written specifically for The Fisherman’s Friends and Cousin Jack a track written by Steve Knightley of Show of Hands. Embraced by the folk community (including a Good Tradition Award at the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards) ‘ONE AND ALL’ features a host of special guest instrumentalists including John McCusker – fiddle, Michael McGoldrick – pipes, flutes and whistles, Andy Cutting – melodeon and Leo Abraham – guitars.

ONE AND ALL - The Fisherman’s Friends are:
Jeremy Brown – Fisherman (52), John Brown – Fisherman (54), Julian Brown – Fisherman (57), Jon Cleave – Writer & Shopkeeper (54), Billy Hawkins – Potter (62), John Lethbridge – Farmer & Engineer (56), John McDonnell – Builder (62), Jason Nicholas – Fisherman (41), Peter Rowe – retired Fisherman (79) and the late Trevor Grills – Builder (54).
